I just refinished a 12' aluminum jon boat. i simply removed the paint with a grinder, washed the bare aluminum with water and repainted with duralux aluminum boat paint. i applied the boat paint with a small foam roller and the results were very good. i purchased the duralux boat paint for $ 75 us dollars.. Aluminum is perhaps the perfect material for building boats, especially flat-bottom fishing and hunting boats. aluminum is lightweight, durable and easy to work with. but like most metals, it can be difficult to paint. the trick to painting aluminum lies in the preparation. a clean surface and proper materials are key.. The boat is in panama so we can use tin based bottom paint. i believe boreal only put one coat of epoxy on before using the bottom paint they put on the boat. the epoxy paint has come off in many places do you recommend two coats of epoxy before applying bottom paint..
A. if you want to paint an aluminum boat you first have to use a aluminum oxide primer. make sure the boat is totally clean before priming (lightly sand the boat) then use a tack cloth [linked by editor to product info at amazon] and rub the boat down. then prime it with the aluminum oxide primer.. There is rustoleum marine paint. i used it several years ago on a rusty boat trailer and a 1956 aluminum crestliner. it has held up well, especially on the boat trailer..
